Empowering Communities through Digital Marketing: Introducing Our Communications Specialist

Jamila Johnson Headshot

Greetings, GCHIC community! My name is Jamila Johnson, and I've just joined the GCHIC team as a communications specialist. I am excited to add this to an aspect of my journey, as I am passionate about urban planning, equitable spaces and the DMV area.

As a Washington, D.C. native, who recently moved back to the area, I’ve seen the area grow and change overtime and understand the importance of involving current residents in

the creation of the communities they would like to see.

I have dedicated over a decade of my life to expanding the online presence of nonprofits and small businesses across the country through digital marketing. But for me, it's about more than just numbers and analytics; it's about using my skills to drive real change in my community.

My journey began in the fast-paced world of digital marketing at Hibu, formerly known as Yellowbook. There, I learned the ins and outs of helping small businesses thrive in the digital landscape, from increasing brand awareness to achieving online conversion goals. It was an exciting time, but as I delved deeper into the work, I felt a calling to make a more tangible impact on the communities around me. Moving from that role to reporting and marketing in higher education, I found different ways to leverage my expertise to uplift communities through my role as associate director of digital content for the university advancement division of The Catholic University of America and I hope to do the same as communications specialist for GCHIC.

Outside of work, you'll often find me lost in the pages of a good book, pushing myself to the limit in a boxing class, or enjoying the company of my beloved cat, Cafe.

I look forward to working with you all as we collaborate in telling the story of the Greater Capitol Heights community and GCHIC’s mission, engaging with each other and the greater community at large, and and coming together to build the communities we want to see. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or story ideas at jjohnson@gchic.org. I can’t wait to hear from you!
