Legal Partnerships

Help GCHIC advance community accountability, equitable redevelopment, and transparent

public decision-making.

Your legal expertise helps ensure that community voices shape the policies, plans, and development that shape our neighborhoods.

Greater Capitol Heights Improvement Corporation (GCHIC) welcomes partnerships with law firms and attorneys interested in providing pro bono legal support to advance our mission in central inner-Beltway Prince George’s County, Maryland.

As a Black-led nonprofit serving historically underinvested, majority-Black communities, GCHIC advances community revitalization, public accountability, equitable redevelopment, and neighborhood-serving transit-oriented growth. Legal support is often essential to that work.

We are especially interested in building long-term relationships with firms and attorneys who can provide litigation, public-law, land-use, real-estate, transparency, and nonprofit legal support.

Why Legal Support Matters

GCHIC’s work often requires navigating complex legal systems that shape whether public land, public funding, public records, and public decision-making serve the communities most affected by them.

Pro bono counsel can help GCHIC protect public access to government records, promote transparency in redevelopment decisions, support responsible reuse of vacant or distressed properties, challenge administrative decisions that undermine community plans, and strengthen GCHIC’s organizational capacity as a nonprofit public interest advocate.

Public Accountability and Transparency

GCHIC regularly seeks public records and information from governmental bodies under the Maryland Public Information Act and other legal authorities. Pro bono support can help ensure that public agencies comply with transparency obligations and that community stakeholders have access to information needed to participate meaningfully in public decision-making.

Land Use, Zoning, and Administrative Review

GCHIC is actively engaged in land use and redevelopment issues affecting central inner-Beltway Prince George’s County. When public decisions conflict with adopted plans, undermine transparency, or threaten equitable redevelopment, GCHIC may need legal assistance evaluating and pursuing administrative appeals, judicial review, or related remedies.

Public Accountability and Transparency

GCHIC is working to return vacant, abandoned, distressed, and tax-burdened properties to productive community use. Pro bono counsel may assist with tax-sale-related matters, foreclosure of rights of redemption, title issues, property acquisition, and related real-estate support.

Nonprofit and Organizational Support

As GCHIC grows, we welcome assistance with governance, contracts, risk management, compliance, charitable solicitation, real-estate transactions, and other legal needs that strengthen our ability to serve the community.
